Solid MTB Hub Upgrade: Novatec Rear Cube Review

This post is part of my activities with AliExpress, and I may receive a commission for purchases made through links in this content.

I recently snagged the Novatec MTB Hub 28/32/36 Holes HG MS Bicycle Rear Cubes 8/9/10/11/12 Speed Mountain Bike Hubs Micro Spline 32H Disc brake Cube for my mountain bike build. I was specifically looking for a reliable rear hub that could handle the increased speed ranges, especially with that Micro Spline compatibility for my 12-speed setup. Initial impressions were good; upon arrival, I was happy to see how securely it was packaged—seriously, this seller knows how to wrap parts so you won't have to worry about receiving anything bent or dented.

Putting the new hub through its paces has been an interesting experience. Functionally, it performs exactly as expected, engaging nicely when I need that power transfer on the climbs. The smooth operation is definitely a plus when grinding out miles on the trail.

However, I have to be upfront—it is noticeably heavy. Other buyers seem to feel similarly; one noted that while everything arrived intact and good, the weight was a factor. For pure, lightweight racing, this might not be the go-to, but for a robust, dependable hub that handles all my intended 8 through 12-speed cassettes, it holds up well.

Despite the heft, what matters most is reliability, and so far, this product delivers. Everything I ordered arrived correctly, and the build quality feels solid enough to withstand some abuse. I haven't encountered the major mechanical issues some unfortunate early reports mentioned regarding ratcheting or bushings, which suggests consistency might be improving, or perhaps I just got a lucky unit.

For most trail riders needing a versatile hub solution across multiple speed standards, this is a strong contender.

If you are upgrading an older bike or building a new hardtail and prioritize durability and broad compatibility (especially if you need 32-hole drilling for disc brakes), this Novatec hub is worth considering, provided you aren't obsessed with shaving every last gram. For the price point and the flexibility it offers across different drivetrains, I'd recommend taking the plunge on this Novatec MTB Hub.
